Statement / Bio
This mixed media collage was made during Liza’s residency at RU in 2019 while she explored natural immersive environments in Brooklyn. The work is inspired by the Brooklyn Botanical Garden informing Liza’s site-sensitive approach to the understanding of sites and their transformative histories. Grobler works in a diverse range of media, embracing bright colors and often incorporating traditional craft techniques to create site-specific work Her work is largely process-driven and incorporates unusual materials such as thorns, beads, and trampolines as well as traditional media such as oil paint, drawing, and obsessive crocheting.

2019 RU alum Liza Grobler is a South African Mixed Media artist who lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. Represented by the Everard Read/CIRCA Galleries, Grobler’s work has been featured in 15 acclaimed solo exhibitions and numerous group and site-specific projects. In 2015, she realized a permanent public artwork for the Cape Town International Design Capital. In 2016, IZIKO Museums commissioned Grobler to create a site-specific work for the atrium of the National Gallery. Her work is in the permanent collections of Spier Art Collection (South Africa), Zeitz MOCAA Hotel, Cape Town, Luciano Benetton Collection (Italy), Frans Masereel Collection (Belgium) among others
