Nestled in the French Pyrenees at 750m altitude, 10km from the Spanish border and surrounded by snowcapped peaks, waterfalls and forests, is the picturesque thermal town of Aulus-les-bains. In the town, housed in a beautifully renovated 19th century hotel, is CAMP - the first of a new breed of arts residency. In 2018, CAMP will run a series of arts, music, writing and arts-activist sessions. These are no ordinary courses - they are intense, artistic catalysts run by internationally acclaimed practitioners; creative flashpoints designed to change the lives of everyone involved. The courses combine work in our well equipped facilities with projects carried out in the mountains.
CAMP houses advanced facilities available to all residential students - a Pro Tools studio, digital video and photography editing suites, rehearsal and performance spaces, fine art studios, a cinema and an arts library. Accommodation is provided at the centre in peaceful, private rooms, and all catering is included - this is one of the most celebrated regions of France for cheese, wine and other local produce. It's a place where great art is made, new movements are formed, new ideas are explored and groundbreaking people are nurtured. It's about generating revolutions, incubating creative minds and bringing the best emerging practitioners in all artistic fields to their full potential.
A central and inspirational figure, Anne Bean is (intentionally) a difficult artist to categorise. Since the early 70's, this 'uncatchability' has been a purposefully created strategy to question purpose, style, consistency, career and categorisation itself. Morphing between numerous contexts, materials, media, collaborations, ideologies and manifestations she challenged herself to follow a trajectory that allowed for fluid, direct and dynamic response, resulting in a huge range of solo and collaborative projects as well as curatorial enterprises worldwide.
In Anne's book Autobituary, writer Guy Brett captures this scope and reach: "Reading Anne Bean's CV is like following a continuous performance, a continuous response to the world... a 'magicification' of the world. The panoply of places she has worked, times of the day or night, interiors, exteriors, seasons, publics, materials, concepts, tools, is astonishing: all shifting but all attuned to unique situation."
Anne has exhibited in major galleries worldwide (Tate, Hayward, Royal Academy), received large-scale awards such as a British Council Creative Collaborations fund and a Tate/LADA Legacy: Thinker in Residence Award. She has been artist in residence in numerous high-profile institutions including Franklin Furnace (New York), Whitechapel Gallery (London) and Sidney Nolan Trust (Wales).
Fundamentally, Anne's course will be about deep collaboration; consciously using chance so that the session unfolds towards various manifestations with different participants taking a lead at various points. The group will surprise itself with unknowable trajectories, resulting in works that provide freedom from known blueprints - a reaching inwards and outwards with all senses and antennae on full alert. Growing organically from classroom sessions based around Anne's work, and that of other artists she has worked with or witnessed, the session will move into outdoor spaces, using the landscape and surroundings to full effect.
Included in the course fee: five days of classes and activities, a comfortable private room at CAMP, all meals - breakfast and lunch at CAMP, dinner at an excellent local organic restaurant, unlimited use of our recording studios, editing suites, rehearsal studios, library and other facilities, post-course benefits & support including exhibition and performance opportunities at Fuse Art Space and across our network of UK and European partners.
