Kalamari Klub is an international artists’ collective for the celebration of analogue photography. We believe in film, the fine art of darkroom printing and experimental processes. Since 2016, we have been promoting and supporting local and international artists through festivals, exhibitions and workshops. In September 2017, we opened up a community darkroom, and for the first time ever, we are inviting you to join us.
How does it work?
During the time of the residency, the artist will be provided with accomodation in an apartment and have 24/7 access to our black-and-white darkroom, while working side-by-side with other artists and photographers. You will get to know the local darkroom community, learn from others, and improve your photography skills. We aim to provide you with the necessary materials for your project free of charge.
We are dedicated to keeping analogue photography alive and the darkroom process running. During the residency, we invite you to host a workshop together with us on a topic or process of your choice. If you have an idea or a project in mind, feel free to mention this in your application.
Who can apply as Artist in Residence?
The application is open to all artists working with analogue and experimental photography, as well as all those who would like to deepen their understanding of analogue processes. Whether you can distinguish HC-110 from D-76 just by sniffing it, or you have never seen a darkroom from the inside but cannot wait to lock yourself up for a whole month — we’re inviting professionals and enthusiasts alike to submit a project that chimes in with the analogue medium. The minimum age at date of application is 18 years.
How do I apply?
Applications are accepted either in digital or analogue form and can be in English or German. In order to apply, please provide the following documents:
- Application form (Download here (English) or here (German))
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Letter of Motivation: tell us why you are applying and what you would like to work on during the residency (max. 500 words).
- Portfolio: an overview of your projects, a series of photographs, a website, or any other form of media that shows your work. Please include relevant dates and titles.
Please e-mail all your application documents in one zipped folder, labelled "kalamariklubresidency_lastname_firstname" to email@example.com. If your .zip file exceeds 15MB, please provide a download link instead (Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc.).
If you would like to send in physical material (prints, books, work samples, etc.), mail all your material together with the other documents to:
Kalamari Klub - Freiraum für analoge Fotografie e.V.
c/o Max P. Martin
The deadline for all applications is Friday, February 23, 2018 at 23:59 CET. If you are considering sending in physical work, please make sure it reaches us before that date.
Please note, we can not pay for returns. If you would like to have your material returned, contact us in advance. We will handle your submitted work carefully, but can not guarantee a damage-free return of your work.
The successful artist will be selected on the basis of their submitted material, artistic merit and project proposal by a jury composed of Max P. Martin, Nicolas Reinhart and Anna Rieger (Kalamari Klub), Sylvia Ballhause (Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie) and Stefanie Kleinsorge (Port 25 — Raum für Gegenwartskunst). Applicants will be notified of their status in early March 2018.
Kalamari Klub’s Artist in Residence project is supported by the office of Cultural Affairs Heidelberg.
