chaNorth is a New York State artist residency aimed at providing a nourishing, focused environment for emerging and established artists as they continue their committed practices. chaNorth accepts applications in all creative fields, including but is not limited to visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition, and performance.
The program offers an opportunity for 5-7 artists to remove themselves from the typical demands of daily life and immerse themselves in a creative live/work space for four weeks. Resident artists will be provided with a private furnished bedroom and semi-furnished studio. chaNorth is located on five acres of sprawling meadow, adjacent to hundreds of acres of undeveloped woods in the scenic Hudson Valley. The residency fosters a culture of both serious artistic production and plays with a strong focus on healthy communal living. Shared kitchens are stocked with fresh, local, organic produce and whole grains. Cooperatively prepared meals act as the anchor of the program. In addition, residents are asked to contribute 3 hours per week working at McEnroe Organic Farm, allowing artists the opportunity to interact with the environment, the community and agricultural history of the Hudson Valley. With the exception of farm shift and weekly potlucks, this program is intended for residents to have undisrupted time to focus on their continued studio practice.
chanorth residency offers artists multiple opportunities to introduce, share work and network.
Studio visits 2-3 times per session from curators, critics, gallerists, residency directors from NY and other art professionals.
Each session culminates in an Open Studio event that is open to the general public.
