Program Description:

ASTRA is an artist residency inviting emerging artist to work and live in selected cities around the
world. Founded in 2017, ASTRA is run by Teodora di Robilant, Lucrezia de Fazio and Claudia
d’Oncieu. It is a place which enables a collaborative dialogue, ranging from sharing a home to
influencing each other in the creative process. The aim is to create a continuous movement, made
of a flow of people, places and favourable situations that will contribute to the progress of each
artistic practice, while demolishing the premeditated roles of artist, curator and gallerist.

The first volume will be held in Spoleto, an ancient city surrounded by hills in the region Umbria.
Spoleto is recognized as a world heritage site by Unesco and renowned for the Festival dei Due
Mondi, held every year during the summer, since 1958. The artists are invited to reside in the 14th
century Franciscan hermitage of Santa Maria Maddalena, situated in Monteluco, a limestone
mountain covered by woods.

Volume I will be focusing on the suggestive location of the hermitage, the story it tells and the
collaboration needed to coexist in such a unique place.

The residency favours proposals from artists eager to work collaboratively, whose work has or aims to have interests related to site-specificity.
