SVA’s Summer Residencies in New York City offer emerging and mid-career artists time, space and a supportive community in which to develop ideas and focus on their artistic direction. A unique combination of creative and professional resources provides a rich environment for growth and opportunity in the current vibrant art scene.
Painting and Mixed Media
Session I: June 1 – July 2
Session II: July 6 – August 6
4 undergraduate credits per session $2,400 per session / $4,500 for both sessions
Now in its third decade, this internationally renowned program offers emerging and mid-career artists an opportunity to work intensively in a private studio and receive individual critiques from faculty, selected for their diversity and experience. Artists are supported in their work with painting, drawing, small-scale installation and mixed media.
Printmaking and Book Arts
Session I: June 1 – July 2
Session II: July 6 – August 6
4 undergraduate credits per session $2,400 per session / $4,500 for both sessions
This residency program will provide participants with access to SVA’s newly expanded printmaking facility and offer them an environment in which to delve deeper into their practice. Artists will develop their work in a supportive and dynamic setting with the guidance of some of New York City’s experts in printmaking and book arts. The workshop area allows for work in silkscreen, lithography, letterpress, etching, woodblock and digital output facilities.
Sculpture, Installation and New Media Art
Session I: June 1 – July 2
Session II: July 6 – August 6
4 undergraduate credits per session $2,400 per session / $4,500 for both sessions
Housed in SVA’s brand new, state-of-the-art facility, this residency gives traditional sculptors and new media artists an opportunity to experiment with the latest in digital technology in an environment that is conducive to inter-media exploration and critical dialogue. This residency is intended for serious artists who work in sculpture and installation as well those engaging in digital video, digital sculpture, rapid prototyping, 3D graphics and other new media.
Photography
Session I: June 2 – July 2
Session II: July 7 – August 6 4 undergraduate credits per session
$2,400 per session / $4,500 for both sessions
This intensive residency is an opportunity for emerging photographers to work in technologically advanced facilities with internationally recognized faculty, to develop a critically rigorous body of work. Resident artists have access to studio equipment and printing facilities, which include black-and-white and color darkrooms, digital imaging and output centers, a range of studio lighting systems, and a variety of camera sizes and formats.
Public Art
July 6 – August 6
4 undergraduate credits; $2,400
This comprehensive seminar series brings together some of New York City’s renowned artists, architects, public administrators and critics for an intensive, interactive experience. SVA’s state-of-the-art digital sculpture facility offers the resources for experimenting with ideas in an environment that is conducive to creative exploration and supportive of logistical issues involved in public art pursuits.
Illustration and Visual Storytelling: Art and Industry
June 1 – July 2
4 undergraduate credits; $2,400
This innovative studio residency offers artists the opportunity to spend the summer in New York City, exploring the wealth of resources available to professional illustrators while developing a portfolio of work that embodies their personal vision. The goals of this residency are to advance participants to the next level of their studio practice and enhance their position in the illustration marketplace.
IMPACT: Design for Social Change
July 12 – August 20
6 undergraduate credits; $6,000
To remain competitive, corporations are looking for innovation and impact in the area of social change as it relates to their business. The non-profit world is seeking new ways to support their constituencies through design strategy. This intensive offers advanced students and working professionals a unique opportunity to study with faculty composed of leading designers and social entrepreneurs and will introduce participants to the growing field of design for social advocacy.
