Statement / Bio
Island is part of a series that represents the light of the moon shining on the river. This work is an evocation of memories and places where Cassel spent time as an adolescent in Argentina, in this case, Tigre, in the Rio de la Plata delta region near Buenos Aires. The representation of water is key from a social and political perspective as well as a more subjective standpoint in this piece.

2016 RU Alum Graciela Cassel is a multimedia artist who works on video installations and sculpture, exploring concepts of subjectivity, change, and border politics. When rethinking border politics, we analyze the intersections between society and individuals; we uncover the power clashes and their incongruities in the systems where different logics exist at the same time. All of these clashes occur in time and are experienced as change. Her work has been featured among others at White Cube Gallery, New York, 184 Project Space, New York, the Bienal Sur (International Biennial of Contemporary Art of South America ), Argentina (curated by Jorge Zuzulich), Sculpture Garden, LIC, New York; Front and Center, SVA, MFA Show (and Speed, North Carolina Museum, North Carolina. Cassel is an award-winning filmmaker. Her most recent film RIVERS was featured in several film festivals including the New Vision International Film Festival, Amsterdam, the Niagara Film Festival in Buffalo and Sydney short Film Festival, and received the Best Experimental Short Film (American Filmatic Award). Her work is in many collections including Citibank, New York, and Museo del Grabado, Buenos Aires
