Statement / Bio
André Cepeda’s seemingly candid approach to representation betrays the depth of familiarity and distance at play in his photographs. Untitled (1) was realized during Cepeda’s residency at RU in 2016 during his exploration of the Red Hook area of Brooklyn. In this photographic work, Cepeda redirects everyday perceptions of the cityscape by focusing on distinctive surfaces, markings or juxtapositions of contrasting surfaces. He also isolates from the surrounding context interesting patterns, shapes, and forms, including the fleeting deriving from the interplay between light and shadow.

2016 RU alum Andre Cepeda is a Portuguese artist represented by Boni Benrubi Gallery, New York, Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art in Lisbon and Galeria Pedro Oliveira in Porto. In 2018 his work was featured in the Portuguese Pavilion, 16th international Architectural Venice Biennal, in the exhibition “Public Without Rhetoric” as well as the 2018 Chicago Architecture Biennale, with ” Before and After Architecture, curated by Nuno Brandao Costa.
